A Transvaginal Ultrasound is an internal pelvic imaging exam that provides high-resolution images of the uterus, ovaries, cervix, and surrounding pelvic structures. It uses sound waves (no radiation) and often provides clearer detail than a standard abdominal pelvic ultrasound.

Why Might I Need This Exam?

Your doctor may recommend this exam if you have:

  • Early pregnancy evaluation

  • Pelvic pain

  • Irregular or heavy menstrual bleeding

  • Ovarian cyst evaluation

  • Uterine fibroid evaluation

  • Infertility assessment

  • Endometrial lining evaluation

  • PCOS (Polycystic Ovary Syndrome) evaluation

PCOS (Polycystic Ovary Syndrome) Evaluation

If your provider suspects PCOS, a transvaginal ultrasound helps evaluate ovarian size and follicle patterns that may be associated with polycystic ovarian morphology (PCOM). Ultrasound is one component of PCOS assessment and is typically combined with clinical symptoms and laboratory testing.

What Conditions Can It Detect?

  • Early intrauterine pregnancy

  • Ovarian cysts

  • Uterine fibroids

  • Endometrial thickening

  • Pelvic masses

  • Ectopic pregnancy (when clinically appropriate)

  • Polycystic ovarian morphology
