What Is a Combined Pelvic Ultrasound?

A Combined Pelvic Ultrasound includes both transabdominal ultrasound (performed over the abdomen) and transvaginal ultrasound (internal pelvic imaging). This combination provides a more complete evaluation of the uterus, ovaries, cervix, and surrounding pelvic structures. Ultrasound uses sound waves and does not involve radiation.

Why Is Both Imaging Performed?

The transabdominal portion provides a broader overview of pelvic anatomy, while the transvaginal portion offers higher-detail images of the uterus and ovaries. Performing both exams together often improves diagnostic accuracy.

Why Might I Need This Exam?

Common reasons include pelvic pain, irregular or heavy bleeding, ovarian cyst evaluation, fibroid evaluation, PCOS evaluation, fertility assessment, endometrial lining assessment, and early pregnancy evaluation.

PCOS Evaluation

Common symptoms leading to PCOS evaluation include:

• Excess hair growth

• Difficulty conceiving

• Hormonal imbalance

What Conditions Can It Detect?
